Chief Inspector Gamache is on another case!

Chief Inspector Gamache is on another case!

I picked up this Louise Penny audiobook when browsing the shelves and was not aware of the treat that was awaiting me!  The Brutal Telling is #5 in the series of 12+ Inspector Gamache novels and begins with the respected pub owner in Three Pines paying a visit to a hermit friend in the woods, only to discover the hermit’s body in the pub the next morning.  Inspector Gamache’s investigation finds that the body has been moved to the pub from the new Bed and Breakfast owned by a not so popular recent arrival. But is that where the body was murdered?  Or was it dumped there with the murder having been at yet another location?   The series is set in the peaceful, yet sometimes deadly, village of Three Pines in Quebec, Canada. Penny’s writing is rich, colorful and haunting.  This series of murder mysteries are not your typical light mysteries.  They are cleverly written to keep you guessing the identity of the murderer right up until the end.  I very much enjoyed listening to the British accent of the narrator, but don’t expect easy listening or reading. The novels are complex and have more than a sprinkling of French-Canadian names and places so you will need to read carefully.  If you are willing to put in just a bit of effort, the rewards of the Inspector Gamache murder mysteries are many!  I plan to check out many more in the series!
