On a recent trip to Wyoming, we had the pleasure of staying in Medicine Bow, Wyoming at The Virginian Hotel. It was built in 1911 and was named after the famous novel, The Virginian by Owen Wister (we stayed in the Owen Wister suite!) The novel was also the basis for the TV Series The Virginian from the 1960’s which starred James Drury and Doug McClure. The novel is set in Wyoming and begins with a traveller getting off the train in Medicine Box, Wyoming. It is cleverly written and has vivid portrayals of the vast Wyoming landscape and the big sky country. Having been in Medicine Bow and several parts of Wyoming, I found that his descriptions capture perfectly the spirit of the American west which apparently has not changed all that much in the last 114 years! Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys western culture!
